What should I know before going to a blepharoplasty?

Is upper eyelid surgery permanent?

Is blepharoplasty a permanent procedure? This particular procedure will not eliminate the effects of aging on the eyes. As a result, the reduction of collagen caused by aging, excessive consumption of alcohol, or exposure to UV light will result in reduced collagen in your eyelids. You will experience a loss of elasticity as well as excessive accumulation of skin in the upper eyelid.  The results, however, should last for a long period of time. Eyelid surgery generally lasts for a period of five to ten years.

Is double eyelid surgery for asian eyes possible?

Unlike Western eyelids, Asian eyelids do not have a crease. Additionally, it is possible that the individual may have flatter eyelids and less prominent brow bones than those with creases in their lids due to excessive amounts of fat and skin in the eyelids. An appropriate procedure for treating the Asian eyelid is a long-incision blepharoplasty in order to remove excess skin and fat. As a correction for Asian eyelids, marking the eyelid in preparation for surgical creation of the crease is an important procedure. In a minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon is prepared to create a fold the patient accepts in order to satisfy patients with minimal double eyelids.

As part of the preparation for eyelid surgery, you may be required to undergo laboratory testing and a medical evaluation to determine if your blood sugar level and blood pressure are appropriate. It is recommended that you refrain from taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements for at least 7 days, which may increase bleeding and bruising. You should also cease smoking.

How painful is eyelid surgery?

The majority of patients are comfortable prior to surgery. Generally, medication is administered at the beginning of the procedure to numb the area. Although there may be some discomfort, it will subside quickly. The majority of patients have minimal bruising and swelling during the recovery process, and are in almost their usual state after one week
